Crocoite belongs to the monoclinic system, usually presented in prismatic, thin, vertically striated crystals and in columnar aggregates. Also granular. It has adamantine gloss and 2.5 to 3 hardness.
This sample was found in Tasmania (Australia).
This mineral has red or orange color and light sensitivity, what can cause change in its color, if exposed for a long time to intense artificial lighting.
Crocoite is considered a secondary chrome mineral, and its main use is as collection mineral. Crocoite photo credit: Henry Yu
