Pyrolusite, known for a long time by humans, was named in 1827, when it was already used to remove brown and green shades in glass manufacturing. This oxide, belonging to Rutile Group, is one of the main manganese sources in the Planet (63% Mn).

Curiosities

In prehistoric human rock painting, the black color was a result of manganese fragment trace.

Use

Today, manganese is used in electrolytic batteries, ceramics, special alloys, chemicals and several other products. In steel industry, it is applied mainly in iron-alloy and steel manufacturing.
